I was sad to hear of Tom’s passing. But was happy to see he lived another 20 years after retirement. That is beyond the norm for hard charging old school cops and a milestone many of us hope to reach. The first time I recall seeing Tom was before I joined LASD. I believe it was sometime in the mid 1980’s. Tom was with a Narco team preparing for a raid in Topanga Cyn. I drove by and saw the team briefing in a parking lot at Topanga Blvd and PCH in Malibu. Tom was decked out in a green Sheriff’s raid vest, Class B hat, Sam brown gun belt and had the “shorty” sawed off Ithaca 37 shotgun with pistol grip slung over his shoulder! Looking like a real bad ass! Of course he was smoking a cigarette and had a cup of coffee! This caught my eye because I was thinking about becoming a deputy. I thought to myself, now that’s what I want to do! In 1988 I joined the department. The next time I saw Tom was in 1989 on a search warrant. I was working the custody gang unit at PHR and we were invited to assist. There was Tom again all decked out with a 2 inch back up revolver in a shoulder holster worn on the outside of his raid jacket! Again something different. And of course a cigarette and cup of coffee in hand! I eventually got assigned to Narco and I carried the same sawed off shotgun on a few Narco operations and thought about the first time I had seen Tom. I saw him on many lab cases. He knew labs like no other. I recall he was always talking about his camper “Rig.” Tom was kind to new guys. I always appreciated his old school stories. Tom was a legend at Narco and was a great instructor when teaching lab classes. We could not help but grin when hearing about the time he was on a entry team when they encountered an armed suspect in a location. Shots were fired and as the team extracted one of the deputies laid down about 10 rounds of cover fire at the windows as they backed away from the location. Guess who? Yeah. Bad ass Tom Holeman. No one died that day except the suspects dog. Thanks for the inspiration. RIP Tom

LASD's Meth Lab Expert, Tom Holeman. Gone but never will be forgotten. Tom had a contagious laugh. He answered the call when needing his expertise in identifying a real active meth lab or those with the chemicals, precursors, and lab apparatuses or elements to cook meth. He answered my call while on a task force. He showed the LAPD, US Customs, and FBI, a true expert. RIP Tom

I got to know Tom while working narcotics. His knowledge of illegal labs was second to none and he was always available to pass this knowledge on to anyone who requested it. Tom was always good natured with a great sense of humor. I will always remember the many operations and investigations we work together and will always have good memories of Tom .Rest In Peace.

My classmate (50) years ago Tom always had a smile and was a talker. I most remember him in the academy drinking coffee from this thermos, smoking and then running in formation with ease.

So sorry to hear that Tom has passed on. I worked with him from 1989 to 1992 during his assignment to the CA DOJ/BNE Clan Lab Task Force. I worked in the Narcotics Section at the LASD Crime Lab and I was assigned to assist this task force with lab related scene responses and analyses. I spent many hours with Tom working on evidence documentation and collection in the wee hours, sometimes in quite unpleasant work environments! He was a great guy and spoke often of his family and daughter playing soccer. I changed assignments in 1992 and one day shortly after I was no longer involved with the task force, Tom showed up at my office with a plaque he had made to recognize my "devotion to duty, attention to detail and willingness to work long hours!" I have attached a photo of the day he gave it to me. Condolences to his family and friends. I know he had worked Firestone Park Station and there were many good men and women who have worked there. Rest in Peace, sir.

Just got off of training at FPK and did something really stupid. Went to Tom for help and guidance. Tom walked me through the issue, discussed possible outcomes and then he recommended a course of action. I took his advice and things turned out alright. Always respected Tom.

Academy classmate. Great friend. Great partner at Firestone. We were partners many times and had many good times together. Except for the times I almost got him killed. He had an infectious laugh.

Tommy, my heart is heavy with your passing. You were my first regular partner after I was released from training at Firestone Station in 1980. We worked together on Day Shift and I learned so much from you. I can still hear your infectious laugh as if you were sitting right next to me. I remember going in pursuit of a stolen corvette, chasing the suspect throughout the ghetto of Firestone. We ended up doing circles in a dirt lot and you started laughing while broadcasting our location on the radio. The suspect eventually stopped and we arrested him without incident. You turned to me and said, "Mike, that was fun. And we're getting paid to do this." You were a professional in every sense of the word. God bless you, Tommy. God's speed.

I worked at Firestone station in the 1970s Tom is correct in the fact his favorite assignment was FPK. He was fun to work with and he knew how to do police work. NY short career on the department included 8 years at Firestone. Great Station, great deputies.
