I spent many lab breaks with Luis in the break room. We had music in common – I’d played the cello in the RI Youth Orchestra and he’d played in the Pasadena City Orchestra. Since they had enough violins, he said he was willing to play viola. I was impressed with his flexibility – a defining characteristic in other respects as well. As I got to know Luis, I discovered that he was somewhat of a Renaissance man. For example, he was an excellent cartoonist. In fact, his UCLA professor called him when he was absent from class. He was kind, considerate and had a droll sense of humor I loved. Although I haven’t seen Luis for years, I have fond memories and the utmost respect for him. RIP dear colleague and friend.

My first memory of Luis was at a Holiday Party around the early-mid 1970s. It was hosted by one of the Associate Pathologists from West Hills Hospital Clinical Laboratory where I worked with Luis for decades. He arrived in a dapper, white suit and colorful tie. Maria was his date that evening and she looked equally stunning in a long, colorful dress with a bright flower in her dark hair. I don’t recall if they were married yet but they made a handsome couple and happily danced the night away.
Another memory I have of Luis was when he came to a Pot Luck Lab Party at my house. He brought homemade Ceviche, the national dish of Peru! I had never tasted Ceviche but I found it to be delicious. It was then I realized Luis loved and appreciated good food. During lunch time in the Laboratory break room, I used to tease him about how long he took to “prepare” his meal - even if it was just a simple sandwich. He would meticulously assemble, cut and “arrange” his food on a plate. Most of the time, the rest of us were finished eating by the time he began. He would just quietly smile.
I know Luis faced considerable challenges in his life but he never seemed to burden others with his problems. For the many years that I knew Luis, I found him to be a very gentle, kind man. May his sweet soul rest in peace. Carole Frakes

I’m so saddened about our loss. I’ve known Luis since 1994 we worked together at West Hills for many years and I have tried to stay in touch over the last couple of years He was a kind person and a hard worker He worked a very long time as a CLS, probably much longer than he should have but I know he enjoyed his work. I’m sure he will be remembered by many people and will be missed. RIP Luis. ❤️ Teri Douglas
