My Dear Brother,
I looked up to you my big brother. I loved you and always will. We grew up together you looked out for me and stood up for me. You were very big and strong. You were creative making liquid soap out of all our leftover soap pieces that you placed in a jar and added water. If only you had gotten a patent for it, you would have been wealthy. You were ambitious and an entrepreneur at a young age; you would get up early and go to the fire stations and other places with your shoe shine kit that you made and shine shoes. You had an early morning paper route. You would return home and share your money with your mother and sisters. You were kind hearted and generous. You bought me my first Barbie doll and white boot skates. It had been 28 years since I last saw you. I did not know if you were dead or alive. I would pray that you were safe. God allowed me to see you again and give you some encouraging words. I asked you if you knew the Lord, and you said, “Yes.” Larissa reaffirmed your belief in Jesus, and you agreed with the prayer. You expressed that you had been a usher at your church. “Praise God”. This is the most important thing that God wants because our spirit never dies.
I have a lot of fond memories of you. You have a special place in my Heart. You will be missed dearly. I thank God that you are now in a better place, no more pain or sorrow. Jesus said, “He was going away to prepare a place for you.”
Love you always, your sister, Jean

Free Spirit
Your dreams led you to explore
What was deep within
Despite the uncertainty held
By friend or kin
To the land where others
Whether known or unknown
Have destined to find
What only they have been shown
You had many adventures
And met many too
But you followed your dreams
For that was certain and true
On the studio sets
You met Him and even Her
They did not understand
For what you stood to prefer
That did not stop
Your mission in life
You traded words on a page and sets on the scene
For so much more than fame on the screen
You used paper and ink
To create images beyond what we think
You expressed your beliefs, emotions, and more
With the hope that something more was in store
Do not worry or doubt that your dreams did not come true
They represented all aspects of you
You were complex
And ahead of your time
Your name in lights was not the goal
For you lived, loved, and opened your soul
You shined your light for all to see
And left a lasting impression on your family
You have earned a spot amongst the stars.
Your Heavenly Father is proud of you.
This I believe is true.
Now, your spirit is free.
This is an original poem inspired by and in honor of Kenzie Heard McCormick written by his niece Larissa McCormick. It was read at his memorial service on September 25, 2020.

I have fond memories of the stories that my uncle Kenzie McCormick would share with my siblings and me when he came to visit us in Indianapolis, IN when I was a teenager.
He would often talk about the adventures that he had as he traveled the country.
The most memorable stories were about the people that he met, worked with, and befriended in California, especially in Los Angeles and Hollywood. He shared how he had met several notable celebrities and even worked for them in some capacity from time-to-time.
I admire how my Uncle Kenzie moved out West to follow his dreams. Too often in life, we hold back from doing the things that we really want because of fear. In some manner, my uncle put his fear(s) aside to live the life that he imagined for himself. For me, my uncle was a true embodiment of a "free spirit." In one way, I followed in his footsteps and in 2020 earned my Ph.D. in Education, and I hope to actualize more of my dreams because of this accomplishment.
I look forward to the day when we reunite in Heaven.
Love Always,
Larissa "Resa" McCormick, Your Oldest Niece
